Tattoo Clue
Back at the Hotel Pulitzer, Daan ordered three beers while Angie and I found a booth. I plopped down on the seat, deep in thought, trying to process what I had seen and analyzing the artistâs reaction. She had definitely wanted to escape from my grip and run away from me. She had looked me square in the eyes without a shred of recognition or relief that it was me. Her sister.
I had seen only anger in her eyes. Why?
Daan settled the triangle of Heineken on the table and sat down next to me. He pushed a glass my way as his navy eyes raked over my face.
âSo next time, Jessica, maybe not physical assault?â He raised a brow. âShe could press charges, you know.â
âI had to go after her. It was her.â
âAnd you know for certain becauseâ¦â
âI saw her tattoo. Just like my sisterâs.â
âWhat tattoo?â Angie asked.
âThe one on her leg. The owl.â
âOh, the owl.â Angie sat back in her chair with her mouth slightly open, shocked.
âItâs her, Ange. No doubt about it.â
âYour sister had a tattoo?â Daan set down his glass. âAre you sure?â
âOf course, Iâm sure. She loved owls. Owl earrings. Owl coffee cups. Owl everything.â
Daanâs sharp features hardened as he contemplated this new revelation.
âIt could be a coincidence,â he ventured.
âThat she looks like my sister, paints like my sister and has a tattoo just like her?â I tilted my head and drilled him with a pointed stare. âSeriously?â
âOkay. Okay.â He held up a hand.
âSo, letâs just say Olivia didnât commit suicide,â I continued. âThat makes the death someone elseâs suicide. Or maybe even a homicide, doesnât it?â I waited for him to nod and then continued. âMaybe her friend Basiaâs, as well. What if the bodies in that garden were the result of a murder?â
âYeah.â Angie set down her glass. âWe never got any real answers.â
âYeah,â I echoed. âSo now I have to wonder.â
âAbout what,â he said.
âAbout the investigation.â
âBelieve me, we did all that we could.â
âMaybe it wasnât the fault of the police. Maybe they just didnât have enough evidence.â
âWhat do you mean?â The tone of his voice grew frosty.
âI read a blog recently that said when police donât have anything to work with in an investigation like Oliviaâs, they label it a suicide. Itâs easier than trying to solve a tough case.â
âBloggers are not police professionals, Jessica.â
âBut they can help solve crimes. There are cold case podcasts out there that are really making a difference.â
âAll amateur detectives.â
âAmateurs that care.â
âEnough!â Daan slammed down his glass. âYou think I do not care?â
âIâm just suggesting thatâ¦â
âThat I and my colleagues push the files into the trash can at the end of the day?â He clapped his palms together. âAll done! Goody-goody. And now for friet and bier?â
âNo.â I flushed and lowered my voice. âIâm suggesting that too many people made too many assumptions about what happened in that garden.â
âFor your information,â Daan continued. âOfficers have only so much time to devote to a case.â
âI know that.â
âAnd at the time, when your sister died, there was an airline crash, if you recall.
